Hello and welcome!

I’m Francis. I’m fluent in English (1st language), Mandarin (2nd language, est HSK5), Bahasa Indonesia, and Medan Hokkien. I also speak basic Japanese and I’m currently learning Korean. Other languages I’m interested in learning are Farsi, Greek, and Hebrew.

I have names in other languages too. My grandparents gave me the Chinese name 林家诚 Lín Jiāchéng. I derived my Japanese name 林誠 (はやし まこと Hayashi Makoto) from my Chinese name. I picked 임준상 (Im Jun-sang) for my Korean name, with the Korean word for my surname 林 and the given name of Winter Sonata’s Kang Jun-sang.

I created Lingua Franca to help fellow learners learn languages and offer encouragement and support. For now, this blog will focus on Mandarin, my 2nd language, as I’ve already been making tweets for Mandarin learners on Twitter’s language community #langtwt. If you follow me on Twitter, you may recognise some of the content here. This blog also serves to organise said content. However, the difference between here and my Twitter is that the content here will be free of limitations such as Twitter’s character limit. Hope this helps!

I am not a licensed teacher. Just a language enthusiast wanting to help.
